⚠️ Spoiler Alert ⚠️
This article covers manga events through Chapter 1179. Anime-only fans should expect spoilers for the Wano arc, the post-Wano power shift, and the Imu reveal.
The Every Yonko Ranked debate is the longest-running power scaling argument in One Piece, and Chapter 1179 just rewrote the entire ceiling. Here at Shonen Vortex, we have been mapping the Four Emperors since the Marineford arc, and with seven sea kings having held the title across the series, this is the only ranking that scales every Yonko by feats, Haki, and verified manga receipts. With Imu revealed as the world’s true endgame villain and Luffy now a sitting Yonko, the dust has finally settled. Right now, this is where every Yonko lands.

The Ranking Methodology
Every Yonko on this list was scored across six axes before placement. We are not ranking by popularity, screen time, or current power level alone.
- Raw output: maximum destructive potential at peak
- Haki mastery: Conqueror’s, Armament, and Observation across the trifecta
- Crew strength: the firepower they command beyond themselves
- Combat IQ: tactical sophistication in major fights
- Durability and endurance: how much punishment they absorb
- Ceiling: theoretical maximum if pushed to the absolute limit
For the broader framework on how Haki, Devil Fruits, and Yonko-tier power interact, our secrets of the One Piece power system explainer is the foundation read.
S+ Tier: The Apex Yonko
These two operate at the highest tier the title has ever produced. They are the reason the world calls Yonko Emperors and not pirates.
1. Edward Newgate (Whitebeard) at Peak Before age and disease compromised him, Whitebeard was officially recognized as the Strongest Man in the World. His Gura Gura no Mi can crack the air itself, generate tsunamis, and according to in-universe statements, hold the power to destroy the world. Even at Marineford, half-dead and outnumbered, he soloed the Marines at a level no current Yonko has matched. The God Valley Incident solidified his prime tier alongside Roger and Garp. For more on that pivotal event, our God Valley Incident explained breakdown maps the full picture.
2. Kaido of the Beasts The Strongest Creature in the World, full stop. Kaido’s Mythical Zoan Uo Uo no Mi Model: Seiryu grants him an Azure Dragon form, and his Bolo Breath demonstrated planet-shaking attack potential at Onigashima. His hybrid form during the Wano final fight is widely scaled as physical-tier above any other Yonko in their prime. Combine that with multiple immortality factors and Haoshoku Haki coating mastery, and Kaido sits firmly at the top of the active Yonko bracket.
S Tier: The Cosmic Tier
S Tier Yonko are top-bracket Emperor material. Each one wins fights against most named characters in the series.
3. Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom) Linlin’s Soul Soul Fruit lets her steal lifespan and animate inanimate objects with extracted souls. Her physical body is famously too durable for steel weapons, and her Haoshoku, Busoshoku, and Kenbunshoku triple-Haki mastery is verified by Wano. Her Homies army gives her crew firepower no other Yonko matches at scale. The only reason she lands below Kaido is the loss in their tag team during Wano and Kaido’s superior raw output.
4. Red-Haired Shanks The most calculated Yonko on this list. Shanks does not wield a Devil Fruit. He does not need one. His Conqueror’s Haki is so refined that he can knock out targets selectively at conscious will, and his swordsmanship rivals any active sorcerer in the verse. Greenbull retreated from him on sight. Kid was eviscerated in a single panel. Our how strong is Shanks breakdown covers the full power profile, and our Shamrock and the Shanks twin truth piece digs into the Figarland family lore that reframes him entirely.
Shanks ranks below Big Mom in raw output but above her in ceiling because his recent feats, including the Kid one-shot and the brewing Holy Knights conflict, suggest his peak has not been shown yet.
A Tier: The Chaos Tier
A Tier Yonko are still apex-level threats, but each carries clear weaknesses or contextual limits compared to the higher tiers.
5. Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) Blackbeard is the only confirmed wielder of two Devil Fruits in canon. The Yami Yami no Mi nullifies other Devil Fruit abilities on contact, and the Gura Gura no Mi gives him Whitebeard’s exact destructive ceiling. The reason he is not higher is execution. Blackbeard has shown Yonko-tier flashes but never sustained dominance. He runs from Akainu, struggles against Law’s awakened technique, and his physical durability has not been tested at Whitebeard or Kaido levels. The ceiling is S+ Tier. The current floor is solid A Tier.
Our Blackbeard Haki full breakdown covers the Haki gap that defines his current placement and why his power scaling sits where it does.
6. Monkey D. Luffy The youngest sitting Yonko in series history. Luffy’s awakened Hito Hito no Mi Model: Nika (Gear 5) gives him reality-bending toon force at the cost of intense stamina drain. His Conqueror’s Haki coating is now fully internalized, and his Joy Boy lineage ties him directly to the cosmic level threats Imu is built to suppress. Our Joy Boy and the Sun God secret breakdown covers the lore foundation.
Luffy ranks below Blackbeard right now purely because Gear 5’s stamina ceiling is hard. Once he masters the form’s longevity, expect this ranking to shift.
B Tier: The Outlier
7. Buggy the Star Clown The most controversial entry on every Yonko list ever made. Buggy holds the title through Cross Guild circumstance, not personal power. His Bara Bara no Mi gives him situational immunity to physical attacks, but his command Haki, raw output, and crew strength are categorically below every other Yonko on this list. He is on the list because the World Government recognizes him. He stays in B Tier because the manga has not given us a single feat that justifies higher placement.

The Imu Question: Above the Yonko
After tracking the Yonko discourse for over a decade, the mistake most rankers now make is putting Imu in this list. Imu is not a Yonko. Imu sits above the Five Elders, above the Yonko, above the entire structure the World Government and the New World pretend to govern. Chapter 1179 made this explicit. Our Imu’s identity revealed breakdown covers the full reveal, the Devil’s Fruit implications, and what it means for power scaling above the Yonko ceiling.
If a Yonko ever reaches Imu’s tier, it will be Luffy at Joy Boy peak. That is the entire arc the final saga is building toward.
For the current state of the Elbaph arc and how Imu’s arrival has reshaped the pirate hierarchy, our Elbaph arc begins breakdown and Elbaph arc episode 3 secrets piece cover the buildup. The Usopp’s Elbaph destiny piece maps the parallel character arc moving in tandem.
FAQs
- Who is the strongest Yonko in One Piece?
Edward Newgate (Whitebeard) at his peak is the strongest Yonko in One Piece history. His Gura Gura no Mi was canonically described as having the power to destroy the world, and he was officially recognized as the Strongest Man in the World before Marineford. - Is Shanks stronger than Kaido?
In the current ranking, Kaido edges Shanks on raw output and Devil Fruit power, but Shanks’s ceiling has not been fully shown. Recent feats including the Kid one-shot and his approach to the Holy Knights conflict suggest his peak may be Kaido tier or above. - Who replaced Big Mom and Kaido as Yonko?
After Wano, Monkey D. Luffy replaced Big Mom and Buggy the Star Clown replaced Kaido in the official Yonko lineup. Shanks and Blackbeard remained from the previous era. - Is Luffy stronger than Blackbeard?
Currently, Blackbeard ranks slightly above Luffy due to dual Devil Fruit mastery and consistent feats. Luffy’s Gear 5 has a higher ceiling but is limited by stamina drain. Once Luffy masters Gear 5’s longevity, the ranking will likely flip. - Is Imu a Yonko?
No. Imu is the secret ruler of the World Government and sits above the Five Elders, the Yonko, and the entire pirate hierarchy. Chapter 1179 confirmed this with his official title as King of the World.
Conclusion
Whitebeard at peak stands alone, Kaido anchors the verse, and Buggy lurks as the comedy edge case that ruins every clean Yonko ranking. After Chapter 1179, the entire conversation shifts upward toward Imu, but the Yonko bracket itself has never been more contested.
